What is Google Wallet?
Google Wallet is a free digital wallet that securely stores your credit cards, debit cards, gift cards, loyalty cards, offers, and more. With Google Wallet, you can shop in stores, buy online, and send money.

You can shop and save in stores by storing all of your gift cards, loyalty cards and offers on the Google Wallet app. You can also purchase in stores using the Google Wallet Card or NFC tap and pay if you have an NFC-enabled Android device.
You can use Google Wallet to buy on Google Play or other Google products, and on select Android apps and sites, wherever you see the Buy with Google button.
You can send or request money to anyone in the U.S. with an email account through Gmail or the Google Wallet app. If they don’t have a Google Wallet already, they can create one in order to send and receive money.
In addition, you can track your online purchases, get shipping notifications, and view detailed order history using the Google Wallet app.
What is the Google Wallet app?
The Google Wallet app lets you save all of your gift cards, loyalty programs and offers in one place, and send money to anyone in the U.S. who has a Gmail or Google Wallet account. If they don’t have a Google Wallet already, they can create one in order to send and receive money. For users with NFC-enabled Android devices, you can also tap your phone to pay in stores.

You can use the Google Wallet app to redeem gift cards, merchant loyalty points, and offers that you’ve saved to the app when you checkout. You can use the Google Wallet Card everywhere Debit MasterCard® is accepted within the United States and District of Columbia.
Where can I use Google Wallet online?
You can use Google Wallet to make purchases on Google Play, or across other Google products, such as Google+, Google Drive, Chrome Web Store, and YouTube. How much does it cost to use Google Wallet?
There are no fees for you to set up Google Wallet and use it in stores and online. You can even send money for free from your bank account, debit card, or Wallet Balance. If you’d like to add money to your Wallet Balance using a debit card, there is a small per-transaction fee of 2.9% (minimum $0.30). Receiving money is always free.
There are also no fees to order and activate the Google Wallet Card, and no annual or monthly fees. Some ATM providers may charge you a fee for cash withdrawals.
What is the Google Wallet Card?
The Google Wallet Card is a debit card that lets you spend your Wallet Balance everywhere Debit MasterCard® is accepted within the U.S., or withdraw cash at ATMs. You can add money to your Google Wallet Card through a linked bank account, debit card, or when a friend or family member transfers money to you via Google Wallet or Gmail. In what countries is Google Wallet available?

What is the Google Wallet Balance?
Your Google Wallet balance is the money that you have stored directly in your Google Wallet. You can use your Wallet Balance to send money to friends, shop on Google Play and other Google properties, transfer money to your bank account, or make purchases using the Google Wallet Card everywhere Debit MasterCard® is accepted. You can also add money to your Wallet Balance at any time from a debit card or linked bank account. Now, you can also add money to your Wallet Balance automatically using recurring bank transfers. Will I continue to earn loyalty or rewards benefits from my credit and debit cards?
You should continue to earn rewards points for purchases through your card issuer’s credit or debit card rewards program (such as gas, grocery, restaurant purchases, and overall spending), if applicable. Certain benefits and rewards may not be applied when using Google Wallet, such as merchant specific rewards (e.g. double points at a specific merchant with a specific card). Applicability of rewards and other benefits (such as purchase protection or insurance) will be decided by your card issuers and not Google Wallet. Learn more.
What devices support Google Wallet NFC tap and pay?
NFC tap and pay functionality is available on many Android phones. You can find a list of supported phones here.
How do I tap and pay in stores with the Google Wallet app?
If you have an NFC Android device, you can use funds from your bank account, credit / debit cards or Wallet Balance to tap and pay in stores that accept contactless payments in the U.S. and District of Columbia. To pay once all your items are scanned:
- Wake up your device. No need to open the app.
- Hold the back of your device against the contactless payment terminal.
- If you're asked for a PIN on the terminal or your device, use your Wallet PIN.
- The terminal might flash or beep to show your payment was made.
You'll need a data connection once a day to tap and pay, and every time you need to enter your PIN or want to change/add payment sources.
What happens when I tap my phone to pay using a credit or debit card in the Google Wallet app?
When you set up tap and pay functionality in the Google Wallet app, you will be issued a Google Wallet Virtual Card. When you pay in store by tapping your phone, Google Wallet passes the virtual card to the merchant for payment, and charges your selected credit or debit card for the purchase.
How does the Google Wallet app transmit payment details when using my phone to tap and pay?
The Google Wallet app uses Near Field Communication (NFC), a wireless connection to transmit payment details to the merchant.
Are my credit and debit card numbers passed to the merchant?
No, only the Google Wallet Virtual Card information is passed to the merchant.
Can I use any of my cards to pay with Google Wallet – even if they aren’t credit or debit cards?
At this time, you can pay with Google Wallet using any of your credit or debit cards. However, you cannot pay with any specialized cards, such as merchant-specific gift cards, Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards, and other single-purpose cards.
Can I tap and pay using the funds in my Google Wallet Balance?
Yes. You can use your available funds in Google Wallet Balance to tap and pay. In this case, Google Wallet will withdraw the corresponding amount of the purchase from your Wallet Balance.
Are there instances when paying with Google Wallet in stores won’t work?
Android NFC devices can be used to pay with Google Wallet where contactless payments are accepted in the U.S. and District of Columbia. In certain instances, the contactless hardware at the merchant location may be old or malfunctioning and may not work. Also, there are a few exceptions where Google Wallet may not work, depending on the merchant type, card type, ticket size, or category of product sold. In any of these instances, if you get an error, please pay by swiping your regular credit or debit card.
Do I need to be connected to the internet to use Google Wallet for tap and pay?
You will need to be connected to the internet in order to unlock the app with your 4-digit security PIN and tap and pay in stores. However, if you set your PIN expiration to “Never” in the app settings, you can pay in stores without having an internet connection.
Will the Google Wallet app work with cards issued outside of the United States?
No. The Google Wallet app is currently available in the United States, and will not work with cards issued in any other country or currency.
How do I set up a Low Balance alert?
To setup a Low Balance alert, open your Wallet app and from your Wallet Balance screen choose “Add Money”, then select “Low Balance Alert”.
How do I set up a recurring transfer?
To get started, open your Wallet app, and from your Wallet Balance screen choose “Add Money”. Under “Add Money”, select “Set up a recurring transfer” and chose the schedule (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) and the amount of each transfer.
How do I save my merchant gift cards to Google Wallet?
To add your gift cards to Google Wallet, open the Wallet App, and then go to the Gift cards tab and click the + sign. Take pictures of your physical gift card, front of the card and back, and we’ll try to read the card. If we can’t read your card, simply type in the gift card number and PIN.
How do I keep track of my gift card balance?
For many merchants, the Google Wallet app will update your gift card balance automatically. For unsupported merchants, you can enter an initial balance and update it manually.
Why don’t I get balance automatically for all gift cards I add to Wallet?
Certain types of gift cards don't support automatic balance updates. For these gift cards, you can type in the original balance and update it manually from within the app.
How do I redeem my gift card in stores using Google Wallet?
You can redeem your gift card at most merchant locations by showing it at checkout. The cashier will scan your gift card or type in the gift card number. When we know a merchant doesn’t support mobile redemption, the app will remind you to hold on to your physical gift card.
Can I add any gift card to Google Wallet?
You can add any merchant-specific gift card to Google Wallet. If you received a gift card electronically, you can also save it to your Google Wallet directly from the e-gift by clicking “Save to Google.” This feature is currently available through select merchants
Why does my synced gift card balance appear to be incorrect?
At some merchants, particularly restaurants, it can take a little time before the gift card’s balance is updated. Try waiting a day and then hitting the refresh button on your gift card.
How can I save my loyalty programs to Google Wallet?
In the Google Wallet app you can easily scan the barcode or type the numbers on the card to add your existing loyalty programs to Google Wallet. You can also join other programs from within the Google Wallet app by clicking on the merchant logo or name.
What are some of the unique features about the loyalty programs that I can join directly from the Google Wallet app?
For select merchants in the Wallet app, you can see real-time loyalty point updates, receive merchant messages, and check your loyalty status.
How do I earn loyalty points with the loyalty programs saved to my Google Wallet app?
At checkout, you just need to scan the barcode or show the merchant your loyalty program ID number saved in your Google Wallet app.
What are the different ways I can send money with Google Wallet?

You can request money from anyone in the U.S. with an email address using the Google Wallet app. You can also request money in Gmail by hovering over the attachment paperclip icon and clicking the $ icon to attach the request to a Gmail message on your desktop. The recipient does not need to have a Gmail address, but must sign in or sign up for Google Wallet to send the money.
If I’m still using the old Gmail compose, will I be able to send money with Gmail?
Sending money through Gmail is only available in the new compose experience. If you aren’t using the new compose, you can upgrade by clicking “Try out the new compose experience” next to the “Labels” button in your Gmail. You can also send money from the Google Wallet app.
What if the person I am sending money to does not have a Gmail account?
You can send money to anyone in the U.S. who has an email account, even if it is not Gmail. In order to claim the money, the email recipient will need to sign in or sign up for Google Wallet and verify their identity.
Do I need to have Google Wallet to send, request or receive money?
You will need to have or sign up for Google Wallet to send money. You’ll also need to verify your identity to receive or request money. If you have ever purchased anything on Google Play, then you most likely already have a Google Wallet. If you do not yet have a Google Wallet, don’t worry, the process is simple: go to wallet.google.com and follow the steps.
What if the person I am requesting money from does not have a Gmail account?
You can request money from anyone in the U.S. who has an email account, even if it is not Gmail. In order to send the money, the recipient will just need to sign in or sign up for Google Wallet.
What happens if the person I send money to does not claim the money?
If the recipient does not claim money sent within 14 days, the money will be returned to the sender’s Google Wallet Balance.
How do I receive money?
You will receive an email when you are sent money. If it is your first time receiving money, you’ll need to sign in or sign up for Google Wallet and verify your identity. After that, the money you are sent will appear automatically in your Google Wallet Balance. You can then use your Wallet Balance to transfer to your bank account, send money to friends, purchase on Google Play, purchase in stores with the Google Wallet Card or NFC tap and pay, or withdraw money at ATMs with the Google Wallet Card.
What happens if the person I request money from does not send the money?
You can send a reminder by navigating to the request in your list of transactions and touching “Send reminder.”
Why does Google Wallet need to verify my identity in order for me to claim money or add a bank account?
Certain features of Google Wallet, such as the Google Wallet Balance and sending money, are subject to rules issued by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), an agency of the federal Department of the Treasury. These rules require us to verify the identity of Google Wallet users (through the collection of certain identifying information, such as Social Security Number) who establish certain types of accounts.
Can I send money to or request money from someone outside of the U.S.?
At this time, sending money and requesting money with Gmail and Google Wallet is only available in the United States.
Will I be charged a fee to send money?
No, sending money is always free.

No, receiving money is always free.

Is there a limit on how much money I can send?
There is a daily transfer limit of $10,000 USD and a $50,000 USD transfer limit per 5 day period. This includes both money sent to others as well as money transferred in and out of your Google Wallet Balance. These limits are subject to change.
Is there a limit on how much money I can request?
There is a request limit of $10,000 USD.
Can I send money using a credit card?
No. At this time you can send money using your Google Wallet Balance, debit card, or linked bank account.
How long does it take for the recipient to receive the money?
The recipient will receive an email confirmation that they’ve been sent money immediately after you hit “send”. If you are sending from your Google Wallet Balance or debit card, the recipient will receive funds almost instantaneously in most cases. Sending money directly from your bank account could take up to several days. Google Wallet will notify you approximately how long it will take for the recipient to receive money you sent.
How can I transfer money I received to my bank account?
You can transfer money from your Google Wallet Balance to your bank account by adding your bank account to Google Wallet, under “Payment Methods” at wallet.google.com. After you've added your bank account, you can transfer money from the same page. Please note it may take a few days for the transfer to complete. Google Wallet will notify you approximately how long it will take.
What are other things I can do with my Google Wallet Balance once I’ve claimed money?
Once you’ve claimed money, the money will be available in your Wallet Balance. You will be able to use your Wallet Balance to send money to other people, transfer to your bank account, purchase on Google Play and other Google properties, purchase in stores with the Google Wallet Card or NFC tap and pay or withdraw cash at ATMs.

sites across the web. These offers are tied to your Google account and can
be redeemed with your Google Wallet app at checkout.*

You can find offers to save directly from merchant sites across the web.
How can I redeem the offers?
Simply show your offer from the Google Wallet app to the cashier at checkout. The cashier will either scan the offer’s barcode or manually type it in.
How do I save an offer to my Google Wallet?
Wherever you see a “Get Offer” or “Save to Google” button, a simple click will save that offer to your Google Wallet. If you don't have Google Wallet set up yet, log in with your Google account and download the Google Wallet app. Then, you can start saving offers to your Google Wallet app on your smartphone.
Do I have to pay to save an offer to my Google Wallet?
No. Whenever you see the “Save to Google” button, the offer you are saving is a free offer, not a prepaid offer. When you go to “Offers” in the Google Wallet app, you will see all of your saved offers.
How does the Google Wallet Card work?
The Google Wallet Card is funded by your Wallet Balance. Money is added to your Wallet Balance either by someone sending you money via Wallet or Gmail or by adding it yourself from a linked bank account or debit card. You can deposit money through a recurring bank transfer. The card has no fees to order and activate. There are no annual or monthly fees for the Google Wallet Card.
How can I order a Google Wallet Card?
If you’re in the US and have already verified your identity, you can request a Google Wallet Card from the Google Wallet app or from wallet.google.com. The card would be shipped directly to your mailing address. There are no fees to order and activate the card.
How do I make purchases with the Google Wallet Card?
The Google Wallet Card is accepted only in the U.S. and District of Columbia, everywhere Debit MasterCard® is accepted. Choose either credit or debit at checkout, and if you're prompted for a PIN, enter your Google Wallet PIN.
You can check your Wallet Balance anytime using the Wallet app, or by visiting wallet.google.com. If you don’t have enough money in your Wallet Balance to cover a purchase, tell the cashier in advance how much to deduct from your card and how much you will pay using an alternate payment method. Note that this process, known as "split tender," may not be supported by all merchants.
The money in your Wallet Balance is what you have available to spend, up to a limit of $5,000.00 per 24 hours. This limit doesn't include cash withdrawals at ATMs or banks.
Are there fees associated with the Google Wallet Card?
There are no fees to order and activate the card, and no annual or monthly fees. Google also doesn’t charge any ATM fees, though some ATM providers may charge you a fee for cash withdrawals. Learn more about fees here.
Can I withdraw cash at ATMs?
You can withdraw cash from ATMs, get cash back with purchases, or get cash over the counter at a bank. To withdraw cash at an ATM, select “checking account” when prompted. To check the current limit on how much cash you can withdraw per 24 hours from an ATM or bank, check under "settings" in the app, or click the Wallet App and Card link on wallet.google.com.
How do returns get processed?
When returning purchases, you may be asked to show your Wallet Card to the merchant. Refunds made to the Wallet Card will be deposited in your Wallet Balance.
What PIN should I use for making purchases or withdrawing cash?
Use your Wallet PIN when prompted by a merchant, or when getting cash back at ATMs. You can reset your PIN anytime in the settings of the Wallet app, or by going to wallet.google.com.
What address or ZIP code should I use if prompted during a purchase?
Use the address or ZIP code that is listed as your home address in your Wallet settings. You can update this address anytime by visiting wallet.google.com and clicking on the settings gear icon.
How do I lock my card?
You can only lock your card using the Wallet app. Just go to Settings, then Card details, and touch "Lock card." Once locked, your Wallet Card will no longer work to make purchases or get cash at ATMs. This can be helpful if you've misplaced your card or simply plan to stop using it for a bit. Any pending charges will still be completed while your card is locked. When you want to unlock it, just touch "Unlock card" in the app and you can start using it again right away.
How do I cancel my card?
If you lose your Wallet Card, or decide to stop using it for any reason, you can cancel it by going to wallet.google.com and clicking on “Wallet App and Card”. You can also cancel the card from wallet.google.com and the Wallet App on iOS and Android. After canceling your card, you can also order a replacement card from wallet.google.com or from the Google Wallet app.
Can I use the Google Wallet Card internationally?
You cannot use the Google Wallet Card outside the U.S. right now. The Google Wallet Card may be used only at merchants in the U.S. and District of Columbia, wherever Debit MasterCard® is accepted. See Cardholder Agreement for details.

What if my phone or card is lost or stolen?
You can remotely disable the Google Wallet app or card online at wallet.google.com.
What is Google Wallet Fraud Protection?
Google Wallet Fraud Protection Google Wallet Fraud Protection covers 100% of verified unauthorized Google Wallet transactions reported within 120 days of the transaction date. In order to be eligible for coverage under this policy, you must be a resident of the U.S. and have a Wallet account that is associated with a U.S. address. If you would like to file a report about an unauthorized Google Wallet transaction, please contact us here. How do I lock my Google Wallet app?
You can set a 4-digit security PIN to access your Google Wallet app. Each time you open your Google Wallet app, you will be prompted to enter your 4-digit security PIN.
Is it possible to delete all cards and data from the Google Wallet app on my phone?
Yes, you can reset the Google Wallet app and remove all payment credentials and transaction data via the “Settings” menu in the app. Please note that this feature resets the Wallet app on your phone and erases all data from it, but you will still be able to use your saved cards in your Google Wallet account online for online purchases.
How does Google Wallet protect my payment credentials?
Google Wallet stores your credit and debit cards on secure servers and encrypts your payment information with industry-standard SSL (secure socket layer) technology. Your full credit and debit card information is never shown in the app and won't be shared with the merchant. In addition, access to Google Wallet is protected by password or PIN. We also recommend locking your phone with a passcode for additional security.
What is Host Card Emulation?
Host card emulation allows Android applications to communicate directly over NFC on supported devices with Android 4.4 KitKat. When you touch your phone to pay, HCE enables Google Wallet to pass transaction information to the point-of-sale terminal to complete your transaction.
Could a malicious application access my credit card on Host Card Emulation?
Your actual credit card number is not stored. Only the Google Wallet Virtual Card is stored, and Android's native access policies prevent malicious applications from obtaining the data. Even if the data is compromised, Wallet uses dynamically rotating credentials that change with each transaction and are usable for a single payment only. Finally, all transactions are monitored in real-time with Google’s risk and fraud detection systems.
If someone gets close to my NFC-enabled phone, could they read sensitive data from my Google Wallet?
No. The NFC antenna in your phone is only activated when the screen is powered on and unlocked, and even if the antenna is on and in proximity of a reader, payment credentials can only be transmitted to a payment terminal after you have entered your Google PIN. For the greatest security, we recommend users with Android phones set their "PIN timeout" to 15 minutes so the app is locked soon after use.
Do my issuing bank’s purchase protection policies still apply?
In addition to Google Wallet Fraud Protection, you may also have certain rights under your agreement with the issuing bank of your credit or debit card. Contact your issuing bank for more information.
What data does Google Wallet store about my purchases?
Google Wallet records information about your purchases, such as merchant, amount, date and time, method of payment, and, optionally, geolocation. You can view your Transaction History in the Wallet app and in the online management center.
